Metal texture tutorial by Pirosan Metal texture tutorial by Pirosan
Metal texture for weapons tutorial.

In this tutorial you'll be guided to create a metal texture with some decals and details that are likely to be found on guns. All you need is photoshop (mine was cs4, but any version higher than 5 will be ok i guess). It's definitely not a 'lets make a whole texture for my weapon' tutorial, just essential knowledge that may help you creating texture by combining informations found in this tutorial and maybe another ones.

I've plans to post (after i make them lol) series of gamedev related mini-tutorials about creating textures, focusing on mechanical designs.

You need to forgive me poor english grammar if you want to learn something from this tutorial, but i tried to write it like for my mother, so everybody should understand it.

But be aware: it may be difficult for beginners, so i presume you already have a basic photoshop knowledge.

Generally, i dont need any credit for using my tutorial, if it helps you in anyway, just put a nice comment, so i'll know my stuff is currently usefull, and i'll continue posting things like this one.

And disclaimer: tutorial is based on my personal experience, gained in work and by doing some other online tutorials, so there may be situation when some parts of my tutorial (this one or another) are similiar to someone's tutorial - those thing happens.

this really helped me get great effect for swords I'm making by making highlighted/scratch metal x3 thanks!

Instant fave. This is a real good way to start texturing your gun models if baking well made and lit materials in the model software is not your thing, and would rather hand draw the reflections and all. This tut would be 8,5/10 atleast :)

I get stuck on step two (the sponge filter) because i'm using gimp, which does not have a sponge filter...or it is just very well hidden...
Any idea? I know you use Photoshop, so you might not know what's going on :O

I tried and failed

It's a great tutorial, but I guess fate wants me to stick with meshes and maps and HUD stuff, lol
Pirosan Featured By Owner May 21, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Where did You fail?
Maybe i can help You, i know that sometimes my english may not be best, and You could understand something incorrectly :P
tehlegoguy Featured By Owner May 23, 2011  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I failed nowhere in particular, I just failed at everything XD

I'm just not a creative person with image editing programs

I can makesmall 2D game sprites pretty well, but nothing bigger than 64x64, and I'm pretty good at making menu layouts and HUDs, but as far as 2D things, that's about it XP

I'm happy to be making the little icons and the 3D meshes and animations, and working with friends for textures~
